Asian ports and terminals still dominate the worldwide productivity rankings, five Chinese ports appear in the top ten, with Qingdao retaining its number one position.
APM TerminalsYokohama (Japan) has lost its crown as it slid from first to fourth position, behind three Chinese terminals.
The first productivity report published last July by JOC was based on data given by 17 ocean carriers about more than 100,000 calls made at 400 ports and 600 terminals during calendar year 2012.
This new study, published earlier this month, covers only the first half of 2013. The 17 participating carriers provided data on 65,000 calls. Both times, productivity was defined as the number of total container moves (on-load, off-load, and re-positioning) divided by the number of hours during which the vessel is at berth.

The JOC report says that productivity is higher in Asia because labour is cheaper and terminals assign more yard tractors and dockworkers per vessel. Also, ports work as close to 24 hours a day as possible.
